What To See?

Are you in Saldus for the first time? Would you like to see the most popular sites and have a lasting impression? These are the must-see sites in Saldus!

In May 2019, an impressive sign “Saldus” with the special letter “u” was installed at the scenic viewpoint on Biļļu Hill in Saldus. This location provides one of the best panoramic views of Saldus and the most beautiful views of Saldus hillfort and Lake Saldus. The sign is freely accessible to everyone – it is located on the side of the P109 (Jelgavas iela) next to a large and convenient parking lot. You are welcome to take a photo with this sign and the magnificent views of Saldus in the background!

Saldus St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church is the oldest building of the town and the first stone made church in Saldus – built in 1615 but re-designed by Wilhelm Neumann and rebuilt at the end of 19th century. The church houses unique art monuments: an organ made by K.A. Hermann – a famous expert from Liepāja, a pulpit in mannerism style and a 19th century altar with the altar painting of J. Dering. The well-known Latvian artist Janis Rozentāls has pictured the church in many of his paintings at the turn of the 20th century. His diploma work “After the Service” is particularly notable.

Bronze Sculptures of Characters from J. Rozentāls’ Painting

Honouring the 155th birthday of Janis Rozentāls, seven life-size bronze sculptures depicting characters from his diploma painting “After The Service” were placed on the stairs at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran church. The sculptures represent various social classes, icluding Rozentāls’ parents – his mother Lavize and his father Mikelis. It is known that the artist spent many Sundays by the church, sketching the local people.

The author of the sculptures is sculptor Sandis Aispurs.

Janis Rozentāls – one of the first Latvian professional painters – was born on March 18, 1866 in „Bebri” homestead, Saldus parish. His native land encouraged him to travel further roads to Riga and St.Petersburg. J. Rozentāls came back to Saldus in 1899 as a well-known artist, bought a plot of land at 22 Striku Street and built a studio. The museum was established here after the World War II in 1947. Originals collected by Rozentāls` friend Marts Vējš were the basis for the collection of the museum.
Today the museum consists of several buildings which house the collection of the museum as well as exhibit and history halls. J. Rozentāls’ studio houses a biographical exposition about the famous Saldus resident as well as his early original paintings.

The sculptural fountain “A Drop of Honey”, which was created by sculptor Kārlis Īle, born in Saldus, adorns a square named after the poet and former resident of Saldus – Māris Čaklais, who has compared the town to a “drop of honey in Kurzeme bowl”. The fountain consists of two horizontal honeycombs connected by an impressive drop of honey. The upper honeycomb is a symbol of heaven. The lower comb is a symbol of the earth. And we humans are somewhere in between. The big drop of honey forms the connection between heaven and earth, symbolizing the place of man in the world.

The water flows freely over the edges of the upper honeycomb,  creating a honey rain to cool off and play with.

In May 2019, the special letter “U” was unveiled in O. Kalpaks’ square. It’s dedicated to the new identity of Saldus municipality “Saldus fulfills”. The white, stylized letter “U” is made of durable material. You can sit and step on it, and it is illuminated in different colours at night. Everyone is welcome not only to see it in person, but also to capture it in photos.

Walking Trails “Path of Art, Music and Love”

The “Path of Art, Music and Love” is an approximately 5km long route of connected walking trails in the Kalsētas Park. Narrow paths and wider trails will lead you through the hills along the steep banks of the Ciecere river. There are several information boards at the most popular places in the park, displaying facts and stories about historical events and notable people. The information is also translated into English and Russian.

The beautiful nature and walking trail meanders along the Ciecere River from the Kuldīgas Street Bridge to the Saules Street Bridge. On the other side of Kuldīgas Street the walkway continues and leads to the beach of the picturesque Saldus lake. Part of the trail was built as a plankway and is also suitable for visitors with prams. It passes the largest playground of the town. The trail is surronded by beautiful plants and gardens, and the area is especially pictuiresque and impressive during summer time.

The Ciecere River, which was navigable in the 17th century, flows through the park.
